Chinese Communist Congress packs surprises
October 25, 2007
Surprises were galore at the just-concluded 17th Party Congress in Beijing which ushered in a nine-member standing committee of politburo, 25-member politburo and 204-member central committee. Though several upcoming stars more or less found their political career-graphs enhancing, there were several surprises as well in the reshuffle. President Hu Jintao, while retaining his important positions as general secretary, president but more importantly chairman of the central military commission, was able to push through just one of his tribe (Li Keqiang) into this committee.
All other members were either from part of the previous dispensation or compromise candidates between Hu, former president Jiang Zemin or the retired vice-president Zeng Qinghong. This indicates that the political situation in China is still in flux and many more surprises are in the offing in the events leading to the next congress in 2012.
