Sonia sends crowd into raptures
October 2, 2007
Over 2,000 people listened with rapt attention as Sonia delivered a brief address at the ballroom of Marriott Marquis, the venue of a reception organised by the Indian National Overseas Congress, in her honour. Among those, who shared the dais with her included External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs Vayalar Ravi. Minister of State for External Affairs Anand Sharma, Congress Member of Parliament Karan Singh, who is also the chairman of the party's foreign affairs cell and India's Ambassador to the US Ronen Sen.
Sonia also touched upon the economic progress that India had been making in recent years and how that attracted the attention of the world. Noting that while India's economic growth is one of the highest in the world, that is creating new vast opportunities for employment, she said there were still regions and people in India who lagged behind.
"In keeping with our party's manifesto priorities, while fully supporting business enterprise and investment, we are at the same time making special effort to improve the quality of our disadvantaged people's lives. In the last three years we have significantly increased investment in areas like education, nutrition and health. Agriculture is being revitalized and huge allocation is being made by the Centre," she said.
