Bandh Hits Life in Punjab

May 22, 2007
Normal life in Punjab was hit as educational institutions and business establishments remained shut and the public transport system was off the roads on Tuesday following the day-long bandh called by Sikh high priests to protest against the Sirsa-based Dera Sacha Sauda.

The Dera's head Baba Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh had earlier tried to imitate the tenth Sikh Guru Guru Gobind Singh by dressing up in similar attire.

State owned transport -- Punjab Roadways, PUNBUS and Pepsu Road Transport Corporation -- are not operating in the state as well as outside Punjab, adversely affecting the travel plans of people, officials said.

Essential services like the health sector were not affected by the bandh, officials said.
