Gujarat Encounter: The plot thickens

May 05, 2007
In a shocking revelation, the Gujarat government on Monday admitted before the Supreme Court that Kauser Bi, wife of fake encounter victim Sohrabuddin Sheikh, has been killed and her body burnt.

Later on Monday, advocates of an Ahmedabad court decided not to appear on behalf of arrested IPS officer D G Vanzara in the case relating to the killing of Sohrabuddin Sheikh in a fake encounter. They said Vanzara had 'troubled advocates in the past.

On Wednesday an official announced that the two IPS officers will be suspended soon.

Rajnish Rai, a senior police officer who played a leading role in unravelling the case, was abruptly removed from the investigations on Thursday. The investigations will now be headed by Geeta Johri, IG (CID), who has been brought back into the case on a day when the Supreme Court asked the state government to report why she was shifted.
