In Gujarat, go fly a kite

January 12, 2007
The passion of kite flying has existed in India for centuries. Kites are believed to have originated from China and from there spread to India.

Uttarayan, the 14th of January every year, signals the centuries old Gujarati kite festival celebrating the change of season from winter to spring. It is also known as "The Gujarat international Kite festival" since 1989.

During the Uttarayan festival, myriad kites of all colours and sizes in thousands flutter and swirl the skies of Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Rajkot, and cities, towns and villages across Gujarat.

Special foods, drinks, snacks are prepared to be eaten on the rooftops. Friends, neighbours and families make an effort to get together on this day.
