Modi visits his hometown

December 11, 2007
Vadnagar boasts of a 1,200 year old Shiva temple known as Hatkeshwar temple. The town is also the birthplace of twin sisters Tanariri, whose singing spell had enthralled even Tansen, Mogul emperor Akbar's royal musician.

The town, with approximately 30,000 residents, may have lost its glory but exceptional architecture and beauty is still visible in some of the old houses.

Modi has recently sold off his ancestral property here but his brother Som Bhai runs an old age home in town.

Modi belongs to the Modh Ghanchi community, which has traits of the baniya community and worships Lord Krishna.

Modheshwari devi of Modhera town is their family goddess so they are known as Modh Vaniks too. Decades back, Ghanchis used to earn a living by extracting oil from Til, castor and various other plants
