"A few months ago, when the time came for our batch to sign up for permanent commission, a lot of people came up to me to find out whether they should sign up.
I advised all the 16 people who sought my opinion to sign up.
"Then when I went up to my room, I began thinking. Out of nowhere, it occurred to me that I could go back home and join politics and do something for the people. I did not sign up for permanent commission and told my commanding officer that I was retiring. I am a very impulsive person. I do what appeals to my heart. This was one such moment. I am a dreamer," Mehta said.
After he decided to join politics, Mehta did his homework. He studied great political thinkers including Karl Marx. "I also read up a lot about Indian politics and politicians. I learnt about our political system," he says.
Mehta, whose attempt to join the Indian Air Force was derailed because he did not get his Ayurvedic medical degree certificate on time due to internal politics in his college, knows the difficulties he will face in his new assignment.
