So what if 'madame' is late?

April 26, 2007
The crowds lined up in massive force, an unruly, thrilled populace split right through the middle, by gender: men sat on one side, women -- several from a garment factory with 'welcome Rahul Gandhi' signs -- on the other.

For a public address scheduled at 1400 hours, Mrs Gandhi did not arrive till 1545 hours. Up until then, the Congress self-glorifying machinery chugged on, making digs at Mulayam and Amar Singh, a few speakers eliciting some tired laughs from the audience, by now wilting in the insane heat.

They still wore their bright tiranga-coloured Congress peak caps, and jumped over one another to get their hands on the Congress scarves being sporadically distributed; almost as much as for the rare bottles of mineral water.
