Good morning, Rae Bareli

April 23, 2007
Four days away from Uttar Pradesh's biggest ever Assembly Elections, you can justifiably expect local political party centres to be abuzz with frantic activity, mounting megaphone-led parades through the city, organising pamphlets and marching bands, getting their mudslinging ammo in place, talking to the press, and preparing to go all out with their respective offensives.

Um, not quite.

It is Tuesday morning, a day after the fourth phase of the UP elections, and the atmosphere in a scorching Rae Bareli is positively soporific. Hunting for the Congress office, we stop at our first landmark, the local supermarket. The word is used loosely here, describing a market one would assume is relatively larger than anything else in the area. Today being Tuesday, most shops are closed. Perfect.
