A predominant Muslim population. Some of the most feared criminals in the fray. The Election Commission playing the enforcer to the T. The ubiquitous central paramilitary forces. All these factors combined to make the third phase of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections the most interesting. Of the 57 constituencies that voted on Wednesday, the Samajwadi Party had won 25 seats in 2002. The Bharatiya Janata Party won 11, the Bahujan Samaj Party took nine, and the Congress four. The SP won a quarter of the total votes polled.
The big question on polling day was whether the SP could emulate its performance of 2002.
