A salute to the national song

September 07, 2006
Several Islamic scholars held that the singing of the song would 'go against Islamic beliefs'. Most notable among these voices was Syed Ahmed Bukhari, the Shahi Imam of Delhi's Jama Masjid.

Others, however, maintained that there was a misunderstanding and that Muslims could sing Vande Mataram, and that they may even choose to do so.

Indeed, there were several Muslims who joined in the celebrations on September 7, such as the ones in this picture, taken in New Delhi.
