herie Blaire, barrister and wife of British Prime Minister Tony Blair, honored India's Minister for Women & Child Development Renuka Chowdhury at a Diwali gala at the United Nations October 20.
Blair is president of the Loomba Trust that seeks to educate children of poor widows in India and other developing countries.
The evening, which marked the trust's formal launch at the United States, bestowed honors on three individuals "whose extraordinary efforts have benefited women and children throughout the world or who are widows who have demonstrated tremendous courage in the face of their individual hardship."
Along with Chowdhury, who is the Union Minister of State (independent charge), Yoko Ono, Japanese-American musician and widow of John Lennon, and Rachel Mayanja, Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women, were honoured.
