An Indian in St Petersburg
July 21, 2006
The 300-year-old city, fairly young by Russian standards, was gleaming. Founded by Peter the Great, its 200 museums, 65 rivers and canals, great monuments, wide walkways, flowerbeds by the roadside, provided a lovely backdrop to the three-day G8 summit.
The rain may have played a bit of a spoiler but that didn't affect the beauty of the city which has been named and renamed four times -- St Petersburg, Petrograd, Leningrad and finally once again St Petersburg.
Russian security staff in their very Russian raincoats and caps could be spotted at regular intervals ensuring that nothing at all caused Putin any embarrassment. The anti-globalisation protestors -- visible and vocal at previous G8 summits -- were nowhere to be seen and tour buses ferrying delegates did the rounds of all the tourist spots.s
