The 5:54 death train, a day later
July 12, 2006
'There but for the grace of God...' was a constant of many conversations. Karim and Kumar had finished work early and hence missed the usual train; Arup Mishra (in the photograph) was delayed by a meeting, and so he, too, ended up not taking the 5.54 local on Tuesday.
The executive from Indiainfoline.com was waiting for a client. "I am grateful to him, that he was running late for the appointment," says Mishra, who only got to Churchgate by 6.30 pm.
By then, bombs had exploded in series; the train network was down; Mishra was one of hundreds of thousands trying to make their way home any way they could.
Getting home was tough, but there is a bright side. "I am lucky to be alive today," Mishra muses.
