India honours its children

India, on Monday, honoured 15 Non-Resident Indians and Persons of Indian Origin with the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman or their contribution in promoting India in their respective adopted countries. The awards were presented at the end of the three-day conclave of overseas Indians in Hyderabad.

President A P J Abdul Kalam presented the awards during the valedictory function of Pravasi Bhartiya Divas 2006.

The award was presented to 11 persons as four - Sisupal Rambharos, Russy M Shroff, Jean-Paul Virapoulle and Fareed Zakaria - were not present.

The glittering ceremony was marred by a protest against one of the recipients of the Samman, Dr Sudhir Parekh.
