The school that Daya Nayak built

Curious children and wary staffers watch as we stop the car dead in front of the principal's office.

Principal Raghuram Bhat is nice and invites us into his office after we introduce ourselves as journalists. But he's clearly uncomfortable talking to us. It is a big office and dominated by a huge framed picture of Daya Nayak in uniform, next to the Husain canvas. There are also laminated pictures of the Big B with Nayak at the inauguration. Right off the bat, Bhat tells us that he has taken over just about a month ago and that he is still learning the ropes. He calls for the school administrator, who he says will be able to give us more information.

He stiffens perceptibly when I ask permission to shoot pictures, but does not say no. I take the opportunity to click a couple of shots. The nervous-looking administrator too joins us. They seem quite happy to discuss the activities of the school but clam up when asked about the Radha Nayak Trust, that built the school, or the role of the trustees in running the school.

Image: Framed pictures of Amitabh Bachchan and Daya Nayak at the inauguration peer out from all prominent surfaces of the school.
