The school that Daya Nayak built

Amitabh Bachchan flew in from Mumbai to inaugurate it in 2000. M F Husain painted a canvas specially for the occasion. Suniel Shetty and Aftab Shivdasani were there, too, to boost the celebrity quotient. The project cost estimates vary from Rs 1 to 3 crore.

Welcome to the Radha Nayak Government High School, troubled Mumbai encounter specialist Daya Nayak's tribute to his native village in Yenneholle, about 70 kms from Mangalore.

Yenneholle is a small nondescript village at the foothills of the Western Ghats, like the many others we passed on the scenic two-hour drive from Mangalore.

The primary school, where Nayak reportedly studied as a kid, still stands. It is like any other small village school.

We veer off the main road into a small bylane. A few hundred metres into it, and there it was. It's quite some school. On a plateau hewn from a mountainside stands the structure that's more elite public school than government higher primary. It's all the more incongruous because this in the middle of nowhere.
