Like Formula One, but with rickshaws

The 'Dhoom Mache De' Auto race was part of the Mumbai festival. The race was first held last year and has attracted more participants this time. As one driver put it, "The first prize gets us earnings of six months!" Seventyone auto rickshaws participated in the prelims on January 21 and 22. 25 qualified for the finals.

Deepak, winner of the third semi-final, declared, "I have dreamt of winning an auto race since childhood. Today, I am going to live that dream."

The fourth semi-final was special because Sachin Pawar, winner of last year's event, was racing. Regional Transport Officer K T Gilani flagged off the race after reminding the drivers: "We are the ones who gave you a license, justify our faith in you."

As the autorickshaws sailed across the 6-kilometre track, the song Kajra Re from last year's hit Bunty Aur Babli blasted from the massive sound boxes. Volunteers manning the pit stops couldn't resist the urge to dance.

All racers had to wear helmets. In this semi-final, the first two who reached the destination were disqualified. They had left their helmets at the pit stop. Supporters booed. The racers said they were not told about helmets being important. "No way!" said the indomitable conductor. "It takes some time to wear the helmet, and you saved that." For effect, he added, "I checked with the Marshals and volunteers. Don't waste your time, I am not going to listen."

The final semi final was the most exciting. The winner was carried on the shoulders of supporters even before he stopped.
