Why they come in lakhs to Chaityabhoomi

December 07, 2006
The bustling streets of Dadar towards Chaityabhoomi (Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar's memorial in Mumbai) on December 6 are a sea of humanity. Open topped lorries and trucks zip through the narrow lanes with young men atop, whistling and cheering. Almost all houses leading to the sprawling grounds are locked. Lights are on in a few houses, but they are shut.

It is the Dalit leader's 50th death anniversary and, depending on who you believe -- the police's conservative estimate of 2 lakh or the organisers' exaggerated claim of 10 lakh -- people have descended on the neighbourhood.
