Clay treasures

August 25, 2006
In Amboli, a north-western suburb of Mumbai, live the seven-member Parab clan.

They live in a modest chawl and do regular day jobs in private companies.

But if you checked out their loft any day in August you will realise there is nothing ordinary about the Parabs.

The 75-square-foot space houses the Parabs' treasures. A platoon of 10 to 15 Ganpatis, lovingly moulded by the family from clay, as opposed to less eco-friendly material like plaster of Paris, have pride of place, at any given time.

For the last 15 years the Parabs have been crafting 60 to 70 made-to-order murtis each Ganesh season.
