In Lebanon, the clock ticks backward

August 10, 2006
The international community, led by America, continues to dither over a ceasefire proposal, with Israel insisting that it will not stop its attacks until a peacekeeping force with a mandate to check Hezbollah activities is in place in southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah, led by Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah, has threatened to turn southern Lebanon into a graveyard for Israeli soldiers. Rejecting any proposal for an international peacekeeping force in the region, he vowed to step up the rocket attacks on Israeli cities.

Estimates of damage to Lebanese infrastructure due to the Israeli blitz range from $3 billion to over $8 billion.
