One day this May, Mumbai businessman Mohammed Sameer took a call from his uncle Kaiser Saleem in Karachi.
Saleem wanted a favour. His 14-year-old son Taha suffered from Thalassemia Major, a disorder of haemoglobin in the red blood cells and wanted Sameer to follow up on some information with doctors in Mumbai.
Sameer worked his contacts and discovered that the nephew of the doctor he was looking for was one of his customers.
"Dr Agarwal is one of the most sought after doctors and it usually takes weeks to even get an appointment with him. Thanks to his nephew, I was able to get an appointment within eight days and discussed Taha's condition with him," says Sameer.
Dr Agarwal put Sameer through to a group of doctors who specialise in Thalassemia cases.
The doctors studied Taha's case and felt he was an ideal candidate for a bone marrow transplant.
Sameer got back to Saleem, and it was decided to conduct a bone marrow transplantation on Taha in Mumbai. Taha's 10-year-old sister Kanza would be the donor.
