Sisters and brothers we worship

August 9, 2006
Raksha Bandhan is a great occasion to make ourselves aware of the famous sister-brother relationships among the gods.

Krishna and Subhadra

Krishna had a sister named Subhadra, who was married to Arjun, one of the Pandavas.

Krishna's father Vasudeva was imprisoned by his brother in law Kansa, the king of Mathura who feared a prophecy that his sister's child would kill him. After Krishna was born he was secretly smuggled out of the prison to be cared for by Yashoda and Nandan.

Vasudeva went on to have another child, Subhadra.

Subhadra's young son Abhimanyu is considered a star-crossed hero of the Mahabharata since he was killed tragically on the 13th day of the Kurukshetra war by the Kauravas.
