Where rakhis are made

August 7, 2006
In a narrow lane just north of the Byculla fire station, near Khatau Mills in south Mumbai, rows of craftsmen sit, swiftly putting together traditional rakhis.

Lataprasad Patwal, who hails from Pratapgarh in Uttar Pradesh, belongs to a family that has been making silk rakhis for generations in Mumbai. In fact, all the craftsmen in this lane bear the surname Patwal. They all arrive from Pratapgarh prior to the start of the rakhi season, put together the rakhis, sell out and then head back.
