Condoleezza Rice, the fashion icon

August 3, 2006
Rice, 51, one of the key members of Team George Bush and one of the most powerful women of the world, grew up in racially divided Alabama.

There have been reports which said Rice used to practise piano while her father Reverend John Wesley Rice Jr stood guard with a gun outside his house during the days of the Civil Rights Movement in America. And she lost a friend when a church used mostly by blacks was bombed in 1963.

She did not let any such thing take her smile away. Or her eye for jewellery.

And neither did she waste the music training, having accompanied Chinese American cellist extraordinaire Yo-Yo Ma for Brahm's Violin Sonata in D minor.
