Six beacons of hope

Far from the superficial shine of cellphones and shopping malls, some people quietly usher in revolutions. They fight injustice and light the lamp of knowledge and empowerment in the darkness of rural India.

As part of its 10th anniversary celebrations, weekly newsmagazine Outlook honoured six such beacons of hope with Speak Out awards.

The magazine's journalists screened thousands of entries sent by readers and chose a few hundred nominations.

The shortlist was then given to a jury comprising journalists B G Verghese, P Sainath, Kuldip Nayar, former Chief Election Commissioner and Rajya Sabha member Dr M S Gill and Outlook Editor in Chief Vinod Mehta.

United Progressive Alliance chairperson Sonia Gandhi gave away the awards to the chosen six in New Delhi last fortnight.
