Pakistan and Pakistan Occupied Kashmir suffered extensive damage in the quake. The toll from these two regions is over 30,000.

Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf complained of a shortage of helicopters needed to ferry in relief workers, food and medical supplies, and appealed for international help.

Musharraf has sought aid from the international community, especially the West.

Despite reeling under the aftermath of the quake which hit Jammu and Kashmir, India has offered rescue and relief assistance to Pakistan.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in a message to President Musharraf said, 'While parts of India have also suffered from this unexpected natural disaster, we are prepared to extend any assistance with rescue and relief which you may deem appropriate.'
