Despite the extremely strenuous journey, hundreds of thousands of devotees undertake this pilgrimage every year.

Their faith in Lord Shiva and the legend surrounding the Amarnath cave inspire devout Hindus to visit Amarnath at least once in their lifetime.

As the legend goes, Lord Shiva chose the cave for narrating the secrets of immortality and the creation of the universe to his wife Parvati. Unknown to them, a pair of mating pigeons eavesdropped on the conversation.

Having learned the secret, the pigeons are said to have made the cave their eternal abode.

Many pilgrims have reported seeing a pair of pigeons as they trek the arduous route to pay obeisance to the ice-Shivling.
