The Bharatiya Janata Party has plunged into turmoil after its powerful president Lal Kishenchand Advani resigned over the furore about his controversial remarks in Pakistan.
His praising Mohammed Ali Jinnah sparked off protests not only from hardliners in the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, but also from the BJP's rank and file.
If the BJP fails to convince the charismatic leader to take back his resignation, the Advani era -- where the party grew from a mere two Lok Sabha seats in 1984 to power at the Centre in 1996, 1998 and 1999 under his leadership -- will end.
If Advani remains adamant, who could step into his larger-than-life shoes?
