It was supposed to be a routine 14-day Presidential visit to Russia, Switzerland, Iceland and Ukraine.

In his inimitable style, President A P J Abdul Kalam, in addition to winning the support of these countries for India's claim for a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council, also won a lot of hearts with his charm and wisdom.

rediff.com presents you images from the President's tour.

The President's first stop was Russia, where he visited the Duma -- the Russian parliament -- and met President Vladimir Putin. Both men held an hour-long one-to-one meeting in the Kremlin on May 24 and explored the possibilities of a just world order, where there is no interference in the internal affairs of other countries.

Considering his keen interest in science, he also visited the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Moscow State University and the Sukhoi Design Bureau.
