General Joginder Jaswant Singh formally took over on Monday as the 22nd chief of the Indian army from General Nirmal Chand Vij.

Prior to his elevation, Gen Singh was general officer commander in chief of the Western Command. He has been decorated with the Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and the Vishisht Seva Medal.

General Singh, an NDA graduate, is India's first Sikh Army chief. He was commissioned in the Indian Army on August 2, 1964.
