It was an unforgettable evening for thousands of ordinary people -- and they are the ones who make Mumbai truly great and to whom the event was dedicated -- who witnessed the inauguration of the 10-day Mumbai Festival on Friday.

The setting was perfect: the magnificent Gateway of India. The atmosphere, with a nippy January breeze blowing in from the Arabian Sea, couldn't have been better.

Politicians, corporate honchos, poets, actors, classical singers, activists, models, they were all there.

And they all sang paeans to one of the greatest cities in the world.
