Under Section 61 (9) of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, it is obligatory for the civic body to provide primary education to children between the age of 6 to 14.

If teachers of BMC-run schools find that a particular student is not attending classes, they visit their home and persuade the family to send the children to school.

"After the slum demolition drive, attendance fell tremendously. What can we do? Where do we go to bring the students back? Their houses are demolished and they have no permanent address. Many families have left the area," a teacher of the BMC-run M H B M School in Malvani said.
