Nambiar was India's envoy in Kabul during the civil war in Afghanistan. Before taking charge at the UN he was posted as India's high commissioner to Pakistan and was commended for his diplomacy by President Musharraf after the July 2001 Agra summit. One recalls the general saluting Nambiar and greeting the high commissioner at the Pakistan independence day celebration in Islamabad that August.
The reception -- Nambiar and his wife Malini greet guests -- drew a large number of diplomats from various countries, including Pakistan, Russia, the US and Australia.
