Engraved on the base of the monument known to the world as the Statue of Liberty are Emma Lazarus' lines: Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.

The Statue of Liberty is ready to welcome the world's huddled masses for the first time since America's national monument was closed following 9/11.

Liberty Island -- where the statue is located -- was reopened to the public two months after the terrorist attacks, but the statue remained off limits to visitors.

Construction work to address security and safety concerns has been completed and the statue was opened to the public on August 3.

Factoid: The statue weighs 450,000 pounds and its official title is 'Liberty Enlightening the World.'
