The Iyers that sing

There must be something about the clan's sambar.

Usually classically trained, the Iyers make for phenomenal playback singers, a fact A R Rahman seems well aware of. Here's a look at some of the most prominent surname-sharing singers in our cinema.

Mahalaxmi Iyer

Iyer, who took Urdu classes to cover her South Indian accent, made her singing debut with A R Rahman's Dil Se. Then came a slew of hit soundtracks, from Mission Kashmir and Saathiya to Salaam Namaste and Fanaa.

And finally, she sang India's very own Oscar-winning song Jai Ho along with Sukhwinder Singh for A R Rahman's Slumdog Millionaire. Wow.
