"Uppi is not only a director's actor, but also a director's director and a producer's actor and director," director-producer S V Rajendra Singh Babu said of his hero in Budhdhivantha, Upendra.
The Kannada film produced by Babu and Mohan has been classified as the blockbuster hit of the 2008, and has recently completed hundred days in many centres.
In this interview, Upendra speaks about Budhdhivantha and his forthcoming films.
What do you think are the major factors that contributed to the huge success of Budhdhivantha?
When I saw the film Naan Avan Illai directed by K Balachandar and then its new version released a few days ago, I immensely liked the way the story was presented. Both the versions had some novelty in it. It was a well enacted film. All the heroines in the film had done very well.
The producers who had bought the Kannada rights were telling me that they would either do the film with me or not do the film at all. I also thought the role was tailor made for me. But I did want to showcase a different characterisation in each of the roles I played. And that is how Panchamurtha's role was conceived. Today when people tell me that creation of Panchamrutha's role was the best in the film, I am naturally happy.
