'I knew it would be a Bollywood film, but one with class'

What were your suggestions on the script?

Sridhar Raghavan (who penned Bluff Master, Apharan and Khakee) has done a terrific job on the script. What I had seen was the first draft, and I was sure my suggestions would have been incorporated. I thought that the film's spine should revolve around the theme that there are no shortcuts in life. I wanted that to be brought out vividly. The thought was there in the first draft but I wanted it to be more visible.

I wanted the emotional quotient of the film to be higher. I hope we have been able to do it. I did not want the film to be a tearjerker; yet, I wanted the audience to have a lump in their throat. At the end of the day, I knew it would be a Bollywood film, but one with class.

The Bollywood genre allows you to be vocal about your emotions. At one moment, you could be singing a sad song in a film, and the next, you will be dancing with 100 Chinese soldiers. But without strong emotions, a film does not go anywhere. I have believed that this is true for not only our films but for films made in other countries. Could Titanic have become a worldwide phenomenon just because of its great technology and special effects?
