'Yash Chopra has inspired me'

In the first part of an extensive interview with Nikhil Advani, the director talked at length about how he got Akshay Kumar to star in his upcoming film, Chandni Chowk To China.

In the second part, he talks to Arthur J Pais about his relationship with the producer, Rohan Sippy, and the filmmakers who have inspired him.

How did Chandni Chowk to China come to you?

Rohan Sippy, who produced the film, is a dear friend. He come to my home every third day or so. He gave me a script about two years ago. I read it, made a few notes, and returned it to him. He looked at my suggestions, and stunned me by saying, it is yours; you have to resolve the problems.

All the while I was thinking that Rohan (who last directed Bluff Master) would direct this film and he wanted my opinion on the script. Everything had been in place except for the director at that stage. I had already made a very emotional film (Kal Ho Naa Ho) and a romantic film (Salaam-e-Ishq), and I jumped at the idea.

I knew this was a far bigger project than anything I have been associated in the past decade. That was another reason for me to sign the film. The true test for a director is to narrate a story in any kind of genre and Rohan was giving me yet another opportunity to do that.
