How did you give it an international touch?
The film was captured on reel and then treated digitally. We used software called BARCO. With this software, we can play with colours or change the look of the film. This is also called CG (Computer Graphics) where you can create something that cannot be created in reality -- make glasses break or generate smoke out of nowhere.
Vikram was very specific about the CG effects he wanted. This is all visualisation.
This is how Chroma is done. Chroma means using a green or blue screen in the background and shooting. Then, we remove the screen and add whatever background we want. It can be a still background with only the characters moving or it can be a footage with the characters moving.
Scanning old footages is called Rotoscopy. Old footages are archived by the concerned authorities. You need to get permission to use those footages, but one can do wonders with it. For example, in Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic, the museum scene is treated on Rotoscopy. The scene where Rani and the children walk with Mahatma Gandhi is a classic example. We took an old footage of Gandhiji walking with many people. We replaced some of the people with Rani and the kids. Similarly, creating the heavenly, smoky atmosphere, and Rani riding a bicycle on the rainbow is the magic of CG.
