Classic ideas, retold

Time is restless. And so, trends change, philosophy (out) grows.

But some ideas never lose their essence or significance inspiring filmmakers to package their films around classic, period stories in a contemporary backdrop while retaining its emotional relevance.

rediff.com looks up this curious twist of old wine in a new bottle in Bollywood films.

Dev-D

The bewildered responses to No Smoking had no impact on his affections for the offbeat. Instead, you can trust writer-director Anurag Kashyap to think out of the box. The man is now back with his stoner version of author Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's widely read and adapted tribute to melancholic romance, Devdas.

While the original, set in pre-independence India, revolved around the unrequited lamenting of a constantly inebriated Devdas, his childhood sweetheart Paro and an unconditionally-loving prostitute, Chandramukhi, Dev-D is a sexed-up, modern take on the iconic whiner (played by Abhay Deol) who besides an obvious upgrade of his handle, is a cocaine-sniffing, 'turned on' bad boy haunting the murky lanes with a crude lingo and broken heart.
