Baz Luhrmann single-handedly resurrected the Hollywood musical with this surreally overwhelming assault on the senses.

Moulin Rouge! filled our eyes and ears with motion-picture wonderment, and gave us visuals we hadn't dare dream of. Alongside songs from all over the place, songs from Anu Malik and Sting here made the characters' own, songs gliding unexpectedly into one another as the rollercoaster rose higher and higher.

A redheaded Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor played the singing-dancing leads, but Jim Broadbent and John Leguizamo were excellent in their roles.

Having said that, this opulent and marvellously intoxicating celluloid cocktail was all bartended Luhrmann's magical concoction.
