Stepping into Nandanar's shoes

At just 20, Govind Padmasurya has made a sensational entry into films playing the protagonist in director M G Sasi's Malayalam film Adayalangal, which is based on the life and literature of well-known writer Nandanar (1926-1974).

Gopi the protagonist in the film has a lot of autobiographical elements of Nandanar. Many characters from different works of Nandanar are taken and fused in Gopi to recreate Nandanar's spirit.

The movie starts at the battle field of India- China war in 1962. Thirty-five year old soldier Gopi is thinking about his past. The flashback starts from 1944, at the time of the Second World War when he was just 19.

Before enacting the character, Govind, a final year degree student whose only experience facing the camera was for a music video, did some disciplined research about Nandanar.

In this exclusive chat, Govind talks about his experiences. Excerpts:
