Meet the men behind the Bat-suit

Michael Keaton

Michael Keaton brought Batman into the modern, crime-riddled streets of Gotham City. Given Tim Burton's unconventional style, 1989's Batman was a decidedly dark movie that required Keaton to portray a virtuous yet vulnerable superhero.

Although the movie was a hit, and by most measures Keaton succeeded, some critics called his performance listless. His performance in 1992's Batman Returns was equally strong, making him the first actor to portray Bruce Wayne twice on celluloid.

Keaton mastered the intelligent and complicated mind of Bruce Wayne. But he never actually had the body required by Batman. The comics describe Batman as being in his 'peak physical condition' but a peak at Keaton revealed an actor, who was clearly not. The films' action scenes with Keaton were painful.

But Val Kilmer's Batman Forever would change that all.
