'Bollywood was not on the list until The President Is Coming happened'

A well-known theatre artiste, Lilette Dubey has made a name for herself in Bollywood too, with films like Baghban, Monsoon Wedding, Chalte Chalte, Bow Barracks Forever and Zubeidaa.

Her elder daughter Neha has also done a couple of films like Monsoon Wedding and a small role in Munnabhai MBBS. Now, it's the turn of Lilette's younger daughter, Ira, to make a debut.

Ira will be seen in Rohan Sippy's new production, The President Is Coming. She talks to Nithya Ramani about the film, her passion for theatre and much more.

How did you start your acting career?

It was natural that I would take up acting, since I have actors in my family. I started acting at the age of five, in my aunt's theatre group. Then, I studied theatre in Yale. I graduated in literature from St Xavier's College, Mumbai.

Acting has always been in my blood. But Bollywood was not on the list until The President Is Coming happened.

I have been very experimental with my career. I have worked as a public relations officer, I have done plays with Mahesh Dattani. My mother runs a theatre group, Primetime, and I am its associate director. We run workshops for children. My focus and heart is in theatre even if I do films.
