Celebrating Saroja Devi

Heroines may come and heroines may go but there are few who stay on forever. B Saroja Devi, who ruled the Southern marquee in the 1950s and 1960s, is one such.

Saroja Devi was an alluring combination of sex appeal, beauty, glamour and mystery. She was the perfect heroine. But even this Abinaya Saraswathi, as she was lauded for her charismatic presence, didn't quite make it to the top in a flash.

On the eve of her being awarded the Lifetime Achievement award by the Government of India as a part of the celebrations of India's 60th independence -- Dilip Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar and Tapan Sinha have also been chosen for the award -- looks at the life and times of this Saraswathi of abhinaya in this week-long special.
