 Nominee Spotlight: Julian Schnabel
His first film, Basquiat, was based on the American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat -- a neo-expressionist as well. The film was a sensationally hyped and cameo filled ride, with Jeffrey Wright in the title role, David Bowie as Andy Warhol, and Courtney Love as Big Pink.
Gary Oldman played Albert Milo, a fictional character Schnabel wrote into the film as a substitute for himself. While not a critical or commercial success, the film was an interesting attempt by an artist to explore the troubled life of one of his own kind -- Basquiat died of a heroin overdose at 28.
