'Malayalis have a special bonding with Bengali culture'

What do you think are the highlights of Calcutta News?

At the risk of sounding cliched, I can't help saying that the films is different -- it has a different narrative pattern and a new style. It is a love story as well as a thriller. The technical aspects have been brought out with great care.

How evident is the influence of Kolkata in the film?

Malayalis have a special bonding with Bengali culture and the people there. We have shot extensively in Kolkata and the story is essentially based there. The colonial hang-over that is evident in the streets of the city has been captured well. I was mesmerised by the beauty of the streets which seemed to tell a thousand stories. The brilliance of the western architecture was to be seen everywhere. I don't think there are many places in the country where you find trams and cycle rickshaws like the way you find it all in Kolkata.

Also, the music of the film has been composed by Deb Jyoti Misra, who comes from Salil Chowdhary's school. I think Salilda's tunes still haunt Malayalis in a big way.
