So how much is this strike likely to cost Hollywood?
Well, there was a 21-week strike in 1988, estimated to have cost the entertainment industry excess of
$ 500 million. Right now, the current strike is getting more and more hardlined, and has brought all
of Hollywood to a near-standstill. The AMPTP estimates that WGA writers and crewmembers on strike
have lost over $350 million in wages, and counting.
Hang on, aren't you just being overdramatic? A standstill sounds like a bit much.
Actually, it's as accurate as it gets. Top American television shows are almost entirely stalled mid-season,
and are showing reruns. Hundreds of major Hollywood movies, in various stages of production, have
been derailed, put on hold, or even shelved. The Golden Globes and the Oscar awards this year are
currently in great peril.
