The Academy Awards turned 80 this year, and they did it with a surprising amount of Award decorum, staying away from those nasty, ill-deserved surprises it seems to love springing on us.
Here's a quick look, then, at some refreshingly pleasant decisions that made us smile:
Once winning Best Song
Oh, of course Falling Slowly was the definite best among the nominated songs. It's just that the Academy loves Disney, and their Enchanted bagged three out of five nominations. Once is an excellent film that should have been nominated in at least five other categories, and it's good to see them carry home a statuette.
Irish musicians (and current lovers) Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova gave the best speeches of the night, him talking incredulously about how 'We shot on two Handycams. It took us three weeks to make. We made it for a hundred grand' and her -- after John Stewart brought her back to give her a Volume 2 acceptance speech, something I don't remember in Oscar history -- raising the flag for independent musicians everywhere. 'Fair play to those who dare to dream and don't give up,' she said. Super.
